NZ VIII: ChCh & Tranz Alpine & Greymouth
Posted by J Magnus Ericsson under Resor - Travel , English readingToday was devoted to the scenic train trip between Christchurch on the east coast and Greymouth on the west coast. In between there are e.g. mountains. Tourists love mountains. I am a tourist, so, I love mountains.
It is a little difficult though to appreciate the experience when battling with … tourists … I stand on a vigorously shaking viewing platform on the train, in strong wind, trying to get the best pictures of the snowclad peaks and breathtaking valleys.
Security minded New Zealanders? Due warnings are given, but think of the train as a really old local train; Constant shaking, no smooth braking system, the tracks uneven, the waggons almost lifting from the tracks, when not swaying sideways. Twigs and branches scraping the windows of the car. The steelbars meant to prevent us from falling out seem so … small.
The train itself was perhaps more of an excitement than the views.
Views were a little muted because of overcast skies, and on the return voyage, rain.
Arriving in Christchurch though, I discover that Sumer is icumen in! (Inspired by the presence of a Cathedral next to my bed…). Really warm today!
Not much to say about Greymouth. Descriptive name.
Finally got hold of the credit card company. Problem with cash withdrawals should be fixed.
Tomorrow, bus to Queenstown! And this time, it won’t be for just two nights!
